Psychotherapy Consultancy
My attention is drawn to the, lately very present, self-diagnosis and self-psycho-labeling concerning all mental health issues, including burnout. If someone says “I’m so burnt out”, it is not as when one is being diagnosed with the condition by a professional. Not every workload, work-stress environment, fatigue, and isolation is a form of burnout. We have to clarify what burnout is, and what PTSD and/or Compassionate fatigue is, and only then, we can discuss the risk factors, prevention, and treatment.
The first step is to have clear diagnostics.
For sure, coping tools that help are:
1. self-care,
2. building emotional boundaries,
3. reaching out for support and help,
4. maintaining healthy relationships,
5. journaling, etc.
But again, all coping tools are there, very much known and so much written and read about them, but the role of the mentor/psychotherapist is exactly to guide the client and help him/her pick up only the ones that will help him specifically with his/her individual and uniques symptoms. Not all coping strategies are for all burnout syndromes and all clients.
Let us choose wisely together what works and what does not 🙂
